Margaret Hodgson Trust Margaret Hodgson was born in 1718 and was christened at Aikton church. She died in 1802 aged 84 and is buried at Aikton church. Her estate was inherited from her brother and she added to it by buying School farm (in Wiggonby) in 1792. She established her Trust 1792 at the age of 74. It was to have two main objectives:-To build a school in Wiggonby village and to engage a school master who would receive £40 per year in wages. A school was built during the following 5 years and Miss Hodgson appointed the first master. The school was open to all children in Wiggonby and the surrounding parishes of Aikton, Burgh by Sands and Beaumont and would provide free education to children whose parents estate was worth less than £12 per annum. The trust continues to support Wiggonby school in the form of a yearly grant and supports students going on to further education who live in the above said parishes or whom have been a former pupil of Wiggonby school in the form of a grant, the amount being decided each year. Students studying recognised courses both full and part time after leaving school up to the age of 25 may apply for a grant each academic year they study. Applications for grants need to be to the clerk of the trustees - Mrs Joanne Thomlinson. Notification is in July/August edition of the parish magazine advertising contact and instruction details.
